i2b2 is a repository enabling the researchers in an institution to analyze clinical data coming from both clinical practice and care flow of information and research databases.

This service is based on an open source platform developed in the i2b2(Informatics for Integrating Biology and the Bedside) research center in USA and financed by the National Institute of Health (NIH). This software, also branded i2b2 is an open source solution aimed at building data-warehouse systems for the integration and joint analysis of clinical and research data.
As of today, the development and maintaining of the platform is supported by a wide academic community; furthermore, i2b2 is deployed in hundreds of research hospitals worldwide for the data management of over 250 million patients.

BIOMERIS was in the deployment team of various i2b2 installs across Europe, for diverse clinical scopes (i2b2 projects).

Today, BIOMERIS is the only firm in italy specialising in installation support for i2b2 software. The i2b2 foundation has long since signed an agreement recognizing BIOMERIS’ focus in i2b2 installation services in the research and health care institutions of Europe (https://www.i2b2.org/work/industry.html).

As the number of scientific publications supported by i2b2 suggests (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=i2b2) as well as the findings in a recent analytical work over the 8 years experience at the Georges Pompidou University Hospital in Paris (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28495345), i2b2 is a fundamental tool for supporting research activities, that allows for cutting times and costs for data collection and management.

i2b2 is built to facilitate the flow of information between clinics and research.

These functions are crucial for the optimization of the information integration phase, automating the data warehouse population process and enabling a constant and safe update of the whole platform.

  • Easy and fast data query

    This systems enables the user to self sufficiently query the data-warehouse, thanks to a friendly and intuitive interface.
    The query phase is eased by the implementation of an ontology of concepts through the mapping of the information on the available patients in the data-warehouse. For each project the system is managing an ontology is defined, allowing the selection of interesting patients and the definition of rules based on these concepts.

  • Integrated tools for quick and accurate analysis i2b2 features specific tools for control, reporting, and analysis of the selected patients’ data. The plugins for these tools are nbatively available in the platform.
    A selection of these plugin, targeted at generic analyses:

    Summary-Stats: see how a variable spreads in the selected patient-set
    Correlation/Association: test a correlation/association hypothesis between two variables in the selected patient-set
    KM-Stats: estimate the survival curve for a specific event in the selected patient-set
    Export: export the variables for the selected patient-set in .xls format

    The platform can be tailored to fit the needs of the user, adding custom analysis tools, furthermore, the integration in the software architecture of Weka and the R software suite, allows the development of specific tools for statistical analysis and data mining.
